Tenor Jonathan Boyd has performed in opera and oratorio throughout Europe, North America and South America.
Noted European engagements over the past few seasons include Alfredo from La Traviata (Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, Icelandic Opera in Reykjavik, Opéra de Metz), Lysander from A Midsummer Night's Dream (Nice, Toulon), The Prologue and Peter Quint from The Turn of the Screw (Toulouse), Tom Rakewell from The Rake’s Progress (Théâtre de l'Athénée in Paris, and in Portugal), Anatol from Vanessa by Barber (Metz), Roméo from Roméo et Juliette (Toulon), Werther (Scottish Opera), The Prince from Love for Three Oranges - french version (Maggio Musicale Fiorentino), Tamino from Die Zauberflöte (Malta and Belle-Île), Don Ottavio from Don Giovanni (Liège), Belmonte from Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Limoges), Fenton from Falstaff (Limoges), Lensky from Evgeny Onegin (Metz and Reims). He also sang Beethoven's 9e Symphony (Rouen) and In Memoriam Dylan Thomas by Stravinsky (Berlin Philharmony with the Ensemble Modern).
In South America, he was heard at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires as Lysander, Werther and Don Ottavio and he was Tom Rakewell in Santiago. He sang Britten's War Requiem in Bogotá.
He sang in many Opera Houses throughout the United States, such parts as Don Ottavio, Tamino, Camille de Coutançon in The Merry Widow, Sam in Street Scene, Sam in Susannah, Nadir in Les Pêcheurs de Perles, Fenton in Falstaff, Ferrando in Cosí fan tutti (and also with the Lebanese Philharmonic in Beirut), Narraboth in Salomé, Roméo in Roméo et Juliette, Rodolfo in La Bohème, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Belmonte, Candide, Faust by Gounod...
Jonathan Boyd has an extensive repertoire in contemporary operas including Michigan Opera Theatre’s world premiere of Margaret Garner by Richard Danielpour, New York City Opera’s productions of Mother of Us All by Virgil Thomson and Central Park by Robert Beaser. He also took part in Romeo and Juliet by Lee Hoiby in Vancouver, at the New York City Opera, and at the Kennedy Center, Moby Dick by Jake Heggie and Philip Glass’ Orphée in Pittsburgh, Elmer Gantry by Robert Aldridge at the Florentine Opera.
In the concert field, he sang with the New York Philharmonic in Johannes-Passion conducted by Kurt Masur, with the Philadelphia Orchestra for a recording of I Pagliacci conducted by Riccardo Muti. His repertoire includes such pieces as Haydn’s Creation (with the Flint Symphony), Mozart’s Requiem (Carnegie Hall), Haendel’s Messiah (Baltimore Symphony, Virginia Symphony), Bach’s Magnificat, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater (Montreal Orchestra), Finzi’s Dies Natalis, Britten’s Illuminations, Rimsky Korsakov’s Mozart and Salieri, Rachmaninov’s Vespers, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.
During season 2020-2021, he will take part in Power Her Face by Thomas Ades at the Opéra de Tours.
