François Lis

François LIS   -   Bass

François Lis graduated from the Paris National Conservatory in 2003. He achieved his tuition at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and at the Merola Program of the San Francisco Opera. He was nominated in the « up-and-coming artist » category during the French ‘Victoires de la Musique’ in 2005.


The Paris Opera has been regularly inviting him ever since: he took part in the productions of Platée, Alcina, La Traviata, Ariadne auf Naxos, La Forza del Destino, Hippolyte et Aricie, Carmen, La Cenerentola, L’Enfant et les Sortilèges, Alceste, Le Roi Arthus, Béatrice et Bénédict and Les Contes d’Hoffmann.


In the baroque repertoire, he sang Seneca from L’Incoronazione di Poppea (Paris), Plutone from L’Orfeo (Lyon), Cold Genius from King Arthur (Lille), Borée from Les Boréades (Zürich, Lyon), Jupiter from Platée (Paris Opera, Strasbourg), Anselme from Les Paladins (Basel), Pluton/Jupiter from Hippolyte et Aricie (Glyndebourne, Toulouse), Teucer from Dardanus (Lille) and Melisso from Alcina (Paris Opera).


He also sang Der Sprecher from Die Zauberflöte (Teatro Real in Madrid, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées), Figaro from Le Nozze di Figaro (Lyon, Dublin), Il Commendatore (Tourcoing, Champs-Elysées) then the title-role in Don Giovanni (Saint-Quentin), Sethos from Thamos, König in Ägypten by Mozart (concert in Lille), Basilio from Il Barbiere di Siviglia (San Francisco), Alidoro from La Cenerentola (Paris Opera, Brussels), Asdrubalde from La Pietra del Paragone (Parma, Châtelet), Don Fernando in Fidelio (Châtelet) and Colline from La Bohème (Amsterdam).


An ardent defender of the French repertoire, he sang Zuniga (La Scala, Paris Opera, Hollywood Bowl, Châtelet, Toulouse, Caracas) and Escamillo from Carmen (Skopje), Narbal from Les Troyens (Strasbourg) and Panthée in the same piece (Berlioz Festival), Le Pape from Benvenuto Cellini (Strasbourg), Le Père Laurence from Roméo et Juliette by Berlioz (Warsaw), Marcel from Les Huguenots (Brussels), Hérode from L’Enfance du Christ (Saint-Denis) and took part in the world premiere of JRR Citoyen de Genève by Fenelon (Geneva) and sang in a French opera gala (Marseille).


He sang under the baton of such conductors as Gustavo Dudamel, Daniel Oren, Michel Plasson, Philippe Jordan, Myung-Whun Chung, Alain Altinoglu, Marc Minkowski, William Christie, Ivor Bolton, Paul Daniel, Jun Markl, Riccardo Frizza, Mark Elder, Marc Albrecht, Jérémie Rhorer, Emmanuelle Haïm… and with such stage directors as Robert Carsen, Mariame Clément, Calixto Bieito, Olivier Py, Ivan Alexandre, Laurent Pelly…


During season 2021-2022, he takes over the part of Sethos from Thamos, König in Ägypten by Mozart in concert with the Lille Orchestra.
